About the role#
Hiram Animal Hospital offers a DVM externship program for students seeking practical experience in a small animal practice. This program supports your transition from the classroom to clinical practice by providing hands-on experience under the guidance of a mentor doctor. Externships are flexible, typically lasting two to three weeks, though they can range from two to eight weeks to align with your college curriculum. You will work days, evenings, and weekends as part of the veterinary team.
What you'll do#
Under veterinary supervision, you will participate in the daily operations of the hospital. Your responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories and performing physical examinations.
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrubbing in to surgery and assisting in medical case management.
- Providing wellness care to patients.
- Developing client communication skills.
- Creating accurate medical records, including SOAPs.
- Participating in patient care activities.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Current professional liability insurance.
- Familiarity with the Veterinary Practice Act and the scope of duties allowed under supervision.
- Professional behavior and attire at all times.
