About the role#
HDR is seeking a Water/Wastewater/Water Resources Intern or Co-Op to join our North Carolina Water Business Group. This position offers hands-on experience in a consulting environment, working alongside professionals on water infrastructure projects. You will support projects through all phases, including planning, design, and construction, while gaining exposure to real-world engineering challenges.
What you'll do#
- Support project teams with technical analyses, report preparation, and technical memoranda.
- Review and create project designs and process diagrams for treatment and conveyance systems.
- Use Excel and other analytical tools to produce or verify design calculations.
- Coordinate with subconsultants and assist senior staff in maintaining project schedules and budgets.
- Participate in project tours with Professional Engineers and engage in periodic client interaction.
- Perform occasional field construction inspection and observation.
- Connect with recent graduates and company leaders through mentoring and young professionals programs.
- Produce documentation that meets project scopes and quality standards.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program in Civil, Environmental, or a related Engineering discipline.
- Coursework in water and wastewater treatment, distribution and collection systems, hydrology and hydraulics, or stormwater management.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills with a high attention to detail.
- Basic Microsoft Office skills, with experience in AutoCAD preferred.
- Familiarity with tools such as GIS, PowerBI, or modeling software like HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, and SWMM.
- A commitment to being an active participant in our employee-owned culture.
- Prior project experience in water, wastewater, or water resources is a plus.

- This is a full-time, paid position based on-site.
- Openings are available in Charlotte, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, and Asheville, North Carolina.
- Preference is given to local candidates.
