About the role#
The General Motors Student Corps is a paid summer internship program that connects high school students, college interns, and GM retirees to strengthen communities. As a Program Specialist, you will lead a school-based team to complete community improvement projects while supporting the personal and professional development of high school students. You will gain exposure to different career paths through workshops, mentorship, and a group business case study.
What you'll do#
- Co-lead a school team with GM retirees to guide high school interns through community projects.
- Brainstorm, research, design, and execute projects that improve the school or surrounding neighborhood.
- Teach lessons on resumes, mock interviews, professionalism, and leadership.
- Mentor high school students as they explore career interests and education options.
- Help students navigate higher education and connect to potential career paths.
- Build relationships with students, retirees, program leaders, and partners.
- Communicate expectations and foster an inclusive team environment.
- Maintain the team budget and track payroll for high school interns.
- Participate in training, workshops, and a group project addressing business challenges.
- Meet regularly with a GM mentor to set goals and practice professional skills.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in business, engineering, communications, psychology, technology, social work, education, or a related field.
- Graduation date between December 2027 and June 2029.
- Ability to work full-time (40 hours per week) for the 12-week summer program.
- Demonstrated leadership through academic, extracurricular, or community service activities.
- Strong interest in mentoring students and supporting community-focused work.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively and adapt to changing priorities.
- High level of integrity, initiative, and accountability.
- Willingness to participate in community improvement activities, which may include manual labor like painting or yard work.
- Ability to drive company vehicles for work assignments if required.
Location & details#
- Location: Warren, Michigan.
- Term: Summer 2027 (May 24th to August 13th).
- Work Modality: On-site at the Global Technical Center or assigned high school.
- Employment: Full-time, paid.
