About the role#
As an intern in the Mechanics, Materials and Process Research Lab, you will work on magnetic materials for vehicle and manufacturing applications. You will propose research directions, create technical plans, and lead studies that span magnetic materials discovery, computational modeling, processing, characterization, and validation. Your work will help guide experimental efforts and translate research into practical solutions for motors, sensors, actuators, and power systems.
What you'll do#
- Plan and execute collaborative research in magnetic materials.
- Apply physics-based modeling, simulation, and data-driven approaches to magnetic-materials discovery and performance prediction.
- Investigate structure-property relationships involving magnetization, coercivity, remanence, permeability, loss, temperature dependence, phase stability, and degradation.
- Partner with experimental researchers to guide synthesis, interpret characterization data, and accelerate materials down-selection.
- Evaluate magnetic materials for applications in electric machines, sensors, actuators, power electronics, and manufacturing processes.
- Connect computational predictions with experimental validation using magnetic, structural, thermal, electrical, and mechanical measurements.
- Drive collaborations with GM engineering teams, universities, national laboratories, suppliers, and research partners.
- Maintain awareness of the state of the art in magnetic materials, computational materials science, and related disciplines.
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, publications, and invention disclosures.
- Generate intellectual property and mentor other employees on project goals.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an Advanced degree program (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong foundation in materials thermodynamics, kinetics, crystallography, phase transformations, magnetism, and structure-property relationships.
- Experience with magnetic materials such as permanent magnets, soft magnetic alloys, ferrites, magnetic composites, or magnetocaloric materials.
- Proficiency in computational modeling and simulation, including electronic-structure, atomistic, mesoscale, micromagnetic, phase-field, finite-element, or continuum methods.
- Programming and data analysis skills using Python, C/C++, MATLAB, or similar tools.
- Experience analyzing materials data and working in multidisciplinary research teams.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ph.D. is strongly preferred.
- Experience with DFT, ICME, machine learning, materials informatics, or microstructural characterization is a plus.
- Knowledge of design-for-manufacturing, supply-chain considerations, or sustainability in magnetic-materials systems is beneficial.
Location & details#
- Location: Warren, Michigan.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Work Modality: Hybrid (expected to report to Warren, MI at least three times per week).
- Employment Type: Full-time (40 hours per week).
- Note: This position is subject to export control restrictions and requires the candidate to be a U.S. Person (U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident, asylee, or refugee). GM does not provide immigration-related sponsorship for this role.
