About the role#
This internship provides practical exposure to the defense industry while working alongside engineers on nuclear submarine projects. You will contribute to the design and development of systems for current and future submarine classes. The program focuses on building technical skills through hands-on involvement in engineering activities.
What you'll do#
- Implement systems engineering for electrical and electronic components and software applications.
- Manage the design, development, qualification, and ship integration of submarine electrical systems.
- Work with suppliers to ensure components meet project specifications.
- Design and test software architecture for electrical systems.
- Apply cybersecurity requirements to shipboard systems and manage network security for air-gapped environments.
- Create electric plant designs and technology innovations for next-generation submarines.
- Coordinate with construction trades to implement designs and resolve technical issues.
- Collaborate across departments to ensure integrated solutions, manage schedules, and allocate resources effectively.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a full-time Bachelor or Master of Science program in Electrical, Mechanical, Marine, Software, or Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Network Administration, Security, or Energy Systems Engineering.
- Completion of your Freshman year prior to the start of the internship.
- US citizenship and the ability to pass a medically supervised drug screen and background check.
- Ability to work 40 hours per week for at least eight consecutive weeks between May 2027 and September 2027.
- Minimum age of 18.
- Proficiency with the MS Office suite.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work independently or in a team.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time, on-site internship for Summer 2027.
- Placements are available in Groton, New London, and North Stonington, Connecticut, as well as North Kingstown and Newport, Rhode Island.
- Interns are responsible for their own housing and transportation.
