About the role#
The High Line Fellows: Emerging Leaders program is a three-year, paid youth development initiative for high school students. This program supports your growth through leadership training, career exploration, and hands-on work experience. You will select two pathways to explore your interests and develop new skills while preparing for life after high school.
What you'll do#
- Select two pathways to explore interests, such as Arts & Culture, Civic Engagement, Horticulture, or Park & Visitor Experience.
- Build leadership and life skills through afterschool workshops and summer residencies.
- Lead tours of the High Line for the public.
- Support public workshops and events held on the park.
- Participate in career awareness sessions and engage with working professionals.
- Collaborate and share ideas with your peers.
- Represent the High Line at various events, projects, and community activities.
What you'll need#
- You must be a high school sophomore to apply.
- You must live in or attend school in Chelsea, the Meatpacking District, or Hell’s Kitchen. Students at established partner schools, such as the Fannie Lou Hamer Freedom High School, are also eligible.
- You must commit to the full three-year program through high school graduation.
- You should be comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
- You must be able to walk the 1.5-mile park and participate in physical tasks as needed.

- The program is based in New York, New York.
- This is an on-site role.
- This is a paid, part-time position starting at $18/hour.
- The program follows a rolling schedule of afterschool workshops and summer residencies.
About Friends of the High Line
Friends of the High Line is a nonprofit organization based in New York City. Founded in 1999, it operates and maintains the High Line, an elevated public park built on a historic rail line. The organization raises nearly all of the annual budget required to manage the space. It focuses on the role of public areas in building connected neighborhoods.
