About the role#
FirstEnergy is seeking students for a full-time, on-site Co-Op program focused on occupational health and safety. You will gain hands-on experience by working across Transmission & Distribution, Regulated Generation, and Corporate Safety functions. This position offers exposure to utility industry safety practices through a mix of office work and field assignments. You will work directly with safety professionals and operations leadership to support our safety culture.
What you'll do#
- Conduct workplace inspections, field observations, audits, and hazard assessments.
- Help with incident investigations, track corrective actions, and participate in learning team activities.
- Join safety meetings, training programs, and awareness initiatives.
- Update safety procedures, policies, and related documentation.
- Analyze and report on safety performance metrics and trends.
- Support regulatory compliance, risk assessments, and improvement projects.
- Partner with Safety Representatives to manage operational risk.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited bachelor or master degree program in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Safety, or a related field.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 is preferred.
- Sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate-level standing is preferred.
- Ability to work without employment sponsorship now or in the future.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.
- Strong communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in both office and field settings while following safety protocols.
- Reliable transportation.
- Commitment to at least two Co-Op rotations is preferred.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time position for Summer 2027.
- The role is based on-site within our operating footprint in Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Maryland, or New Jersey.
