About the role#
FirstEnergy is hiring for Engineering Professional Co-Op positions for the Winter 2027 term. This is a full-time, paid opportunity designed to provide professional development and hands-on experience within our Power Delivery and Construction & Design Services groups. You will work alongside engineers to support the maintenance, design, and analysis of our transmission systems.
What you'll do#
- Support engineers in developing and maintaining engineering programs, including performing field walk downs and data verification.
- Assist with engineering studies, analysis, and the development of system equipment models and protection specifications.
- Help create transmission line and substation design packages.
- Investigate reliability issues and maintain substation maintenance strategies.
- Produce summary reports and presentations to document your analysis and recommendations.
- Collaborate with project managers to implement transmission capital projects and support the 5-year capital portfolio.
- Participate in mandatory program events, engage in self-assessments, and present your project contributions to leadership at the end of the rotation.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited four-year degree program in Electrical, Civil, or Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Technology.
- Sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate level standing is preferred, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.
- Successful completion of basic engineering coursework.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and experience with computer-aided design applications is a plus.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and within a team.
- Capacity to work in office and field environments while following safety procedures.
- Ability to work without sponsorship.
Location & details#
- This is an on-site position. You must be willing to relocate to or reside near your assigned reporting location.
- Locations include Akron, Ohio; Greensburg, Pennsylvania; Reading, Pennsylvania; Fairmont, West Virginia; and Morristown, New Jersey.
- A commitment to at least two co-op rotations is preferred.
- This is a full-time role, and you are expected to devote your full attention to the position during regular business hours.
