About the role#
Legal externs work with the Enforcement department to assist attorneys, investigators, and management. You will help determine if regulated firms or individuals have violated federal securities laws or FINRA and MSRB rules. This is an unpaid position for the Winter 2027 term, requiring a minimum of 12 hours of work per week. You must earn academic credit through your school to participate.
What you'll do#
- Perform legal research, writing, and document review.
- Assist staff in preparing for on-the-record testimony.
- Observe on-the-record interviews and settlement negotiations.
- Attend departmental meetings and participate in skills-based training sessions.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as a graduate student pursuing a JD or LLM.
- Strong skills in writing, analysis, and research.
- A professional demeanor, positive attitude, and strong work ethic.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks efficiently while meeting deadlines.
- Ability to pass a drug screening test and a background check.
- Coursework in securities law, knowledge of brokerage regulations, or industry experience are preferred but not required.
