About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineer Intern, you will work with the Hardware Team to design and implement mechanical systems that house sensing and compute platforms. You will collaborate with electrical, compute, and systems engineers to build integrated solutions for use in challenging environments. Your work will cover the full product lifecycle from initial CAD design to production and field support.
What you'll do#
- Design and model mechanical structures, including external enclosures, compute frames, and chassis.
- Build detailed SolidWorks CAD assemblies and run FEA and thermal simulations to validate strength and heat dissipation.
- Select materials and components to meet specific mass, strength, and manufacturability constraints.
- Implement IP-rated solutions using gaskets, seals, and coatings to meet ingress standards.
- Conduct mechanical load testing, thermal validation, and sensor alignment assessments.
- Generate mechanical drawings, GD&T annotations, BOMs, and assembly instructions for fabrication and QA.
- Work with vendors to procure hardware and develop QA checks for incoming units.
What you'll need#
- Current student pursuing a B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks or equivalent mechanical CAD platforms.
- Familiarity with FEA and thermal modeling tools.
- Experience designing for CNC, sheet metal, additive manufacturing, and assembly workflows.
- Comfort with mechanical debugging, thermal test setups, vibration tables, and ingress testing.
- Ability to contribute to electrical, sensing, and embedded computing tasks to support integrated systems.
