This internship focuses on the development of optical terminals for space-based laser communications and the networking services required to connect satellites. You will be matched with a project based on your background and the company's current needs, with the expectation that you will scope, execute, and present your results to the team by the end of the term. You will work directly with mentors in a small, focused engineering environment on production systems.
What you'll do#
- Design and implement optical transceiver FPGA firmware.
- Build a space network simulator to test and refine network architecture.
- Write embedded flight software for space-based hardware.
- Design and fabricate test fixtures or mechanical subsystems for optical terminal prototypes.
- Build high-speed optoelectronic communication test equipment.
What you'll need#
- Demonstrated ability to build things through personal projects, research, coursework, or prior internships.
- Strong fundamentals in at least one of the following: embedded systems, FPGA development, software engineering (C, C++, Python, or Rust), optical or mechanical design, electrical engineering, information theory, or networking and simulation.
- Current enrollment or background in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Computer Science.
- Must be a US person as defined by 15 CFR § 772.1.
Location & details#
- Term: Fall 2026.
- Modality: On-site, minimum 3 days a week in Oakland, CA or El Segundo, CA.
- Duration: Minimum of 3 months.
- Compensation: Paid internship at an annual rate of $70,400, prorated for the duration of the term.
