About the role#
The Environmental Working Group is seeking a communications intern for the Fall 2026 term. This paid internship provides hands-on experience in media outreach, science communication, and digital media strategy within a nonprofit setting. Interns will support projects related to food and agriculture policy, cosmetics safety, and toxic chemical regulation. You will work directly with science communicators to assist in raising the profile of environmental and public health issues.
What you'll do#
- Track and summarize media coverage while compiling quotes that cite the organization.
- Research and write articles for the website.
- Identify and research media outlets and reporters interested in covering specific research topics.
- Monitor social media trends and discussions from reporters and academics regarding environmental topics.
- Draft social media content for BlueSky and X.
- Support press events, including virtual news briefings.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student with at least one year of completed coursework at an accredited institution.
- Good academic standing.
- Strong writing skills and the ability to work on deadline.
- Ability to multi-task and work both efficiently and independently.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- A passion for or curiosity about mission-driven, public-interest advocacy work.
- Relevant majors include Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Environmental Engineering, or Public Health.
Location & details#
- This is a hybrid position based in Washington, DC.
- Staff work in the office 2-3 days per week.
- The role is paid at $20 per hour.
