About the role#
ECHO, Leahy Center for Lake Champlain is seeking an Academic Animal Care Intern to support our animal care team. This position is for students seeking academic credit. You will work with native fish and reptiles, as well as native and exotic amphibians. After training, you will complete husbandry tasks independently and finish assigned project work.
What you'll do#
- Prepare diets and feed animals.
- Clean and maintain animal enclosures in both exhibit and back of house areas.
- Administer medications to animals.
- Create and install naturalistic habitats.
- Handle animals.
- Keep daily records of husbandry tasks and animal wellbeing.
- Research natural history and captive husbandry practices.
- Create and deliver 20 to 30 minute educational programs regarding species natural history, conservation, or captive care.
What you'll need#
- You must be seeking academic credit to apply for this position.
- Preference is given to majors in animal science, wildlife biology, pre-vet, aquaculture, environmental science, or related fields.
- You are enthusiastic, detail-oriented, and reliable.
- You are willing to get wet or dirty.
- You can independently complete husbandry tasks.
- You must be able to lift or relocate up to 60 pounds.
Location & details#
- Location: Burlington, Vermont.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Commitment: Minimum of 4 hours per week for 3 months. Additional hours can be accommodated if required for academic credit.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. You are responsible for arranging and meeting any requirements set by your institution of higher education.
