About the role#
We are looking for a Database Engineer Intern to help maintain the health, performance, and reliability of our database systems. You will work alongside our technology and data teams to gain insight into how data supports our trading operations. Throughout the summer, you will receive guidance from senior team members while contributing to maintenance, troubleshooting, and automation projects.
What you'll do#
- Monitor database availability and performance.
- Assist with routine tasks like backups, patching, and restores.
- Help troubleshoot and resolve database incidents.
- Write and optimize SQL queries for reporting and data retrieval.
- Collaborate with analysts and engineers to support their data needs.
- Maintain technical documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures.
- Assist with user access management and security configurations.
- Identify ways to automate repetitive operational tasks.
- Learn performance tuning techniques such as indexing and query optimization.
- Support data migration, replication, and disaster recovery testing.
What you'll need#
- Current pursuit of a degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Statistics, Information Systems, or a related field.
- Expected graduation date by Summer 2029.
- Understanding of relational database concepts like tables, keys, normalization, and indexes.
- Experience with SQL and at least one database platform such as PostgreSQL, SQL Server, or MySQL.
- Coding experience in Python and exposure to scripting languages like Bash or PowerShell.
- Basic knowledge of Linux or Windows operating systems.
- Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and clear communication.
Location & details#
- This is a paid, full-time internship for Summer 2027.
- You will work on-site at our Chicago office 5 days per week.
