About the role#
This is a project-focused internship for an AI engineer embedded on the DevOps team. You will report to the DevOps lead and partner with internal technology teams. The work centers on internal, production-adjacent tooling rather than training or shipping customer-facing machine learning models. Permissioning, auditing, logging, and cost controls are critical requirements for all project phases.
What you'll do#
- Design and prototype agent workflows that incorporate tool use, policy boundaries, and human-in-the-loop processes.
- Collaborate with platform and service teams to make observability and operational context available for agents in a safe, governed way.
- Build and iterate on RAG systems using permissioned internal data sources like runbooks, system designs, and postmortems.
- Prototype a generative agent to assist with alert responses by proposing structured mitigation suggestions.
- Work with teams to improve the coverage and quality of the internal data corpus.
- Outline how the system could execute approved remediations behind explicit guardrails.
- Document experiments, limitations, evaluation approaches, and safety assumptions.
- Ship all changes via Git using branches and merge requests.
What you'll need#
- Pursuing a BS or MS in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field with an expected graduation date by Summer 2028.
- Hands-on experience using AI tools in real projects, preferably building agents with tools or orchestration.
- Experience with RAG, including applying it to internal or knowledge-base style data.
- Proficiency in Python for prototyping and integration.
- Ability to consume and create APIs, work with JSON, and understand YAML configurations.
- Strong judgment on data handling, including minimizing sensitive data and following security policies.
- Proficiency in Git workflows.
- Linux fundamentals, including shell, processes, and logs.
- Conceptual knowledge of networking basics like DNS, TCP/HTTP/S, and load balancing.
- Kubernetes fundamentals such as debugging, pods, and services.
- Coursework or projects involving Kubernetes, Prometheus/Grafana, OpenTelemetry, CI/CD, Terraform/Ansible, or cloud platforms.
Location & details#
- Location: Chicago, Illinois
- Term: Summer 2027
- Modality: On-site
- Employment: Full-time, paid internship
