About the role#
This internship position uses materials science and engineering principles to analyze products through mechanical, physical, and compositional testing. You will help develop optimized solutions for IC engine, electric power, fuel, air, aftertreatment, battery, and fuel cell systems.
What you'll do#
- Use materials science, materials engineering, or analytical chemistry principles to identify solutions for design, manufacturing, and quality goals.
- Work cross-functionally on projects requiring guidance on material selection, failure analysis, and chemical characterization.
- Apply the relationship between structure, composition, and processing to optimize component performance.
- Use surface engineering principles to manage wear, strength, and corrosion resistance.
- Evaluate component requirements to identify base materials and processing options.
- Select manufacturing routes and materials based on project needs.
- Conduct analysis using spectroscopy, microstructural evaluation, mechanical property measurements, and non-destructive inspection methods.
- Investigate product or manufacturing problems and recommend actions for resolution.
- Collaborate with stakeholders and colleagues to communicate analysis results and advance project goals.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment as a full-time student in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited U.S. college or university.
- A minimum GPA of 2.5 is preferred.
- Ability to commit to a 10 to 12-week program working 40 hours per week.
- Current residency within the continental U.S.
- A willingness to learn from others on the job.
- Technical knowledge in component failure analysis, material and process selection, tribology, non-destructive evaluation, material characterization, and joining and bonding science.
- Skills in decision quality, driving results, collaboration, effective communication, and self-development.
