About the role#
The Equine Reproduction Laboratory at Colorado State University offers an internship focused on on-the-job training in breeding farm procedures and management. This is a full-time, paid position that runs from January 8, 2026, to July 19, 2026. Interns rotate through three service areas: Stallion Service, Mare Service, and Weekend/Overnight duty. This role requires shift work, including nights and weekends, and occasional on-call availability. Housing is available on-site for a required rent.
What you'll do#
- Assist in Stallion and Mare Service operations.
- Perform horse handling, grooming, blanketing, and turnout.
- Administer medications and provide routine medical care.
- Assist veterinarians with examinations, semen collection, semen evaluation, and insemination.
- Support reproductive procedures, including hormone therapy, embryo transfer, and restraint for farrier or medical work.
- Monitor late-term pregnant mares and provide assistance during foaling.
- Maintain electronic and manual records.
- Manage general laboratory functions such as cleaning, stocking, autoclaving, laundry, and reception.
What you'll need#
- A BS degree in Equine Sciences, Animal Science, or a related discipline.
- At least 5 years of experience handling horses.
- Knowledge of basic horse behavior and comfort working around animals.
- Ability to work both in a team setting and independently.
- Physical ability to lift at least 50lbs.
- Valid driver's license or access to a licensed driver.
- Eligibility to work in the U.S. at the time of application.
- Preferred: Experience in an equine breeding farm setting, handling stallions, mares, and foals, or administering IV, IM, and oral medications.
