About the role#
The VWCC Earn to Learn Nurse Extern program is designed for students in the VWCC RN program. This role supports nursing staff in delivering safe and compassionate patient care. You will assist clinical staff, observe and report on patient status, and gain hands-on experience in a healthcare environment.
What you'll do#
- Support nursing staff with daily patient care and safety initiatives.
- Observe, document, and communicate patient needs, concerns, and status changes to the healthcare team.
- Provide emotional support, education, and guidance to patients and families under supervision.
- Assist with activities of daily living including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulation, positioning, and skin care.
- Obtain and record vital signs, weights, intake and output, pulse oximetry, and pain assessments.
- Collect and process specimens and report any abnormalities to the licensed nurse.
- Perform clinical tasks such as blood glucose monitoring, EKGs, oral suctioning, and incentive spirometry.
- Help with patient transport, admissions, discharges, and preparation for diagnostic procedures.
- Maintain a clean and safe patient care environment.
- Respond to patient call lights and communicate needs to the appropriate staff.
- Participate in interdisciplinary rounds and team communication.
- Support early mobility, fall prevention, and emergency situations under the direction of an RN.
- Engage in orientation, training, and competency development activities.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- AHA BLS certification.
- Current enrollment in the VWCC RN program.
