The Canadian Mental Health Association Peel Dufferin is seeking two post-secondary placement students to join the Outreach Team for the Fall 2026 term. This unpaid placement supports individuals experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness through a Housing First philosophy. Students will work alongside Outreach staff to provide client-driven support, recovery-oriented care, and assistance with permanent housing transitions.
What you'll do#
- Build client capacity, empowerment, and self-reliance.
- Develop relationships with prospective clients based on trust, respect, and honesty.
- Assist with securing and matching appropriate affordable housing for those who are homeless or at risk in the Region of Peel.
- Support the transition of individuals into housing using a Critical Time Intervention Approach.
- Conduct at least one weekly community or home visit alongside Outreach staff to connect unsheltered individuals with resources.
- Set short and long-term goals with clients and document support plans.
- Participate in case conferencing with the support systems of program participants.
- Support the overall operation of the Street Outreach and Street Helpline responses.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a university or college program for social work, social services, nursing, mental health, or addictions.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed care and the ability to apply it during client interactions.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to listen, build trust, and communicate across diverse cultures.
- A willingness to learn and apply a practical understanding of diversity, including gender identity, race, religion, sexual orientation, and disability.
- A valid Canadian driver's license, relevant insurance, and access to a reliable vehicle.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with management and front-line staff.
Location & details#
- Location: Brampton, Ontario (On-site and community-based).
- Term: Fall 2026 (up to 4 months).
- Schedule: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, with the option for 12-hour shifts shadowing Outreach staff.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid student placement.
