About the role#
Student Safety Instructors teach safety classes for the ASI Recreational Sports program. You will work under the supervision of the Coordinator of Aquatics and Safety. This role requires you to teach courses according to American Red Cross standards. You must be available to work nights, weekends, and weekdays. This position requires a minimum of two consecutive terms of availability.
What you'll do#
- Instruct American Red Cross safety courses following national standards.
- Prepare classrooms and materials, including tests, handouts, and videos.
- Administer and proctor course tests.
- Maintain current instructor knowledge and apply evidence-based curriculum updates.
- Complete accurate records and reports.
- Enforce policies and procedures while acting professionally.
- Demonstrate customer service skills and work independently.
- Attend all mandatory meetings and training sessions.
- Comply with requirements as a mandated reporter under the California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act.
- Maintain awareness of safety concerns, risk management, and staff area evacuation plans.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment at Cal Poly with at least 6 units for undergraduates or 4 units for graduate students.
- Current authorization as an American Red Cross Instructor for First Aid, CPR, and AED.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with the public, students, and staff.
- Attention to detail and a prompt, courteous, and professional demeanor.
- Instructor status for Lifeguard Training is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: San Luis Obispo, California.
- Work modality: On-site.
- Compensation: $33.00 per hour for instruction time and $16.90 per hour for training or prep time.
- Employment is at-will and requires the successful completion of a background check.
