About the role#
Brookhaven National Laboratory is seeking a Student Assistant to support machine learning research for ASIC design. This role focuses on developing algorithms to accelerate integrated circuit design and improve robustness against hardware failures, temperature changes, and circuit noise. You will work within the Instrumentation Department to support experimental research programs.
What you'll do#
- Research AI and machine learning methods to speed up integrated circuit design.
- Deploy and test AI-driven design algorithms using both open-source and industry-standard CAD tools.
- Develop algorithms that remain stable despite non-ideal effects like circuit mismatch or noise.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited college or university as an upper-level undergraduate (rising junior or senior) or graduate student.
- A degree focus in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related field with an emphasis on IC design.
- Experience deploying machine learning models on common software toolchains.
- Working knowledge of digital IC design flows, including logic synthesis and digital simulation.
- Familiarity with optimization, neural networks, compilers, and processor architectures.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
Location & details#
- This position is located on-site in Upton, New York.
- The term runs from September 1, 2026, to December 18, 2026.
- This is a part-time role, up to 19 hours per week, Monday through Friday.
- The pay range is $19.25 to $30.25 per hour, based on experience and qualifications.
- This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
- Employment requires obtaining and maintaining a DOE Uncleared Personal Identity Verification credential.
