About the role#
Boston Medical Center is seeking a Facilities Operations Intern to support our engineering and plant operations teams. You will assist with ongoing construction and operations projects across our medical campus, which includes over 20 buildings. This role provides hands-on experience in building systems, maintenance programming, and regulatory compliance within a healthcare environment.
What you'll do#
- Assist with the development and expansion of the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and provide technical support for the platform.
- Update CAD-based floor plans and maintain the central database of blueprints, manuals, specifications, and historical building data.
- Monitor and maintain databases related to utility consumption, including the allocation of utility bills.
- Support the operations of the Building Automation System (BAS/DDC) by performing audits, troubleshooting with staff, and ensuring sequences of operations remain accurate.
- Help develop the Preventative Maintenance Program and ensure hospital equipment inventory is accurate.
- Assist in preparing budgets for maintenance equipment, shop tools, and new technology initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with NFPA Life Safety Code and other regulatory agency documentation.
- Manage contracted service personnel, consultants, and programmers as assigned.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a BS in Facilities or Mechanical Engineering.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Proof of enrollment and a letter of recommendation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and web browsers.
- Ability to read and work from complex technical documents, blueprints, and specifications.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to foresee problems and implement solutions.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs unassisted, climb, bend, and walk for extended periods.
- Experience with manual tools, power equipment, and safe handling of hazardous materials.
- Demonstrated respect for a diverse population and effective English communication skills.
- Experience in a hospital or medical setting, or with BL-2 and BL-3 lab environments, is preferred.
