About the role#
This co-op position in the Materials and Analytical Sciences department focuses on transforming a structure-constrained IR assignment engine into a scalable, user-facing application for pharmaceutical solids. You will work on integrating computational chemistry methods with software engineering practices to support our analytical workflows.
What you'll do#
- Scale the existing assignment engine into a documented, production-ready application.
- Predict and rationalize IR band positions for pharmaceutical solids.
- Explore machine learning and cheminformatics to improve assignment accuracy.
- Implement deterministic, reproducible execution, including input validation and audit-friendly output.
- Automate the generation of review-ready IR assignment reports.
- Build a curated benchmark set using portfolio spectra and verified assignments.
- Create an integrated pipeline that processes structural input and generates automated reports.
- Present your results and progress in departmental meetings.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment as an undergraduate, graduate, or advanced degree student in Chemistry, Computer Science, or Computer Engineering.
- A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale is preferred.
- Completion of at least 12 credit hours for undergraduates or 9 credit hours for graduate students.
- Proficiency in Python for scientific computing, including libraries like NumPy, SciPy, pandas, or RDKit.
- Experience with application frameworks such as Streamlit, FastAPI, or Flask.
- Familiarity with version control tools like Git and environment management like conda or Docker.
