About the role#
Before an autonomous excavator digs its first trench on a new site, it has already dug thousands in simulation. The Simulation team builds the virtual environments our autonomy stack trains and tests against. Neural rendering is the next step. We are replacing hand-authored assets with learned representations that capture the visual complexity of real jobsites, such as dust, lighting, and deformable terrain. As our Simulation intern, you will push neural rendering techniques into our pipeline and measure whether they close the visual gap for downstream autonomy performance.
What you'll do#
- Research, implement, and benchmark neural rendering methods like NeRF or 3D Gaussian splatting for generating realistic construction-site imagery.
- Train models on real-world site data captured by our fleet and evaluate visual fidelity, render speed, and temporal consistency.
- Integrate neural rendering outputs into the simulation pipeline to support perception and planning teams.
- Build evaluation metrics and tooling that quantify how well rendered scenes match real fleet data and whether that improvement transfers to autonomy performance.
- Identify and address failure modes including dynamic objects, deformable terrain, dust, and harsh lighting.
- Document findings, limitations, and recommendations on where neural rendering should replace traditional sim assets.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a BS, MS, or PhD in computer science, computer graphics, robotics, or a related field, or equivalent research or industry experience.
- Strong Python skills and hands-on experience with PyTorch or equivalent frameworks.
- Solid understanding of 3D graphics fundamentals, including rendering pipelines, scene representations, camera models, and coordinate systems.
- Familiarity with neural scene representations such as NeRF or Gaussian splatting.
- Comfort working with real-world data from construction sites.
- Published work or project experience in neural rendering, novel view synthesis, or differentiable rendering is preferred.
- Experience with simulation engines like Unreal, Unity, or NVIDIA Isaac Sim.
- Background in autonomous vehicle simulation or synthetic data generation.
- Familiarity with C++ and GPU programming including CUDA, OpenGL, or Vulkan.
