About the role#
As an Architecture Research Intern, you will use simulation and queueing theory to understand how business changes ripple through operations. You will contribute to initiatives in queue management, estimated wait times, and predictive simulation. This is a 12-month opportunity with the possibility of extension.
What you'll do#
- Contribute to predictive models and simulation frameworks.
- Apply queueing theory to model customer flow, congestion, and wait times.
- Build simulation models to evaluate the impact of proposed business changes on customer experience.
- Compare analytical queueing results against detailed simulation and real operational data.
- Formulate and analyze continuous-time models of system behavior.
- Design and apply time-constrained optimization algorithms.
- Design, test, and refine models that capture uncertainty, customer behavior, and system dynamics.
- Apply probabilistic and statistical techniques to evaluate performance.
- Run scenario, sensitivity, and what-if analyses.
- Analyze results and communicate key insights to stakeholders.
- Collaborate with researchers, engineers, and business teams.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing or completed an MSc or PhD in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Statistics, Operations Research, Computational Science, or a closely related quantitative discipline.
- In-depth knowledge and hands-on experience with queueing theory and simulation science.
- Ability to fit queueing models to real data.
- Strong foundation in differential equations, probability, and stochastic processes.
- Working knowledge of optimization.
- Strong statistical judgment.
- Proficiency in Python.
- Experience with AI-powered tools like ChatGPT or Copilot is considered a plus.
Location & details#
- Location: Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
- Work Modality: Remote.
