The William J. Brennan Fellowship is a full-time, two-year position within the Speech, Privacy, and Technology Project at the ACLU National office. This fellowship is designed to provide early-career training and experience in First and Fourth Amendment advocacy. The fellow will work as an integral part of the project team on a wide-ranging docket of cases involving freedom of expression, digital privacy, and the civil liberties impact of new technologies.
What you'll do#
- Participate in litigation at all levels of federal and state courts, including conducting legal and factual research, interviewing clients, and drafting briefs and pleadings.
- Assist in drafting amicus curiae briefs.
- Provide support for affiliate litigation and contribute to legislative and policy work.
- Advance policy goals through public education and participation in coalitions.
- Help manage the summer legal internship program and supervise student interns.
- Engage in special projects and other duties as assigned.
What you'll need#
- A J.D. degree or an expectation of receiving one by Spring 2027.
- A commitment to the mission of the ACLU.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and communication skills.
- A demonstrated commitment to diversity and the ability to work collaboratively and respectfully to resolve conflicts.
