About the role#
The Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief works to protect the First Amendment guarantee of religious liberty. The program ensures that laws and government practices do not promote religion or interfere with its free exercise. Interns gain experience through litigation, public education, and advocacy. You will assist attorneys with cases ranging from district-court to appellate-court levels.
What you'll do#
- Draft memoranda, affidavits, and briefs.
- Conduct legal and policy research.
- Research prospects for new litigation, including factual and legal claims.
- Research and draft materials for public education.
- Track and analyze legislative bills.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in law school with at least one year completed before the start of the internship.
- Strong research, writing, analytical, and communication skills.
- Initiative to see projects through to completion.
- Ability to work with a wide range of people.
- Commitment to civil rights, civil liberties, and the mission of the ACLU.
- Dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion, including a respectful approach to working with others.
- Ability to work collaboratively to resolve obstacles.
Location & details#
- This is a remote internship for the Summer 2027 term.
- You must be based in the U.S. for the entire duration of the internship.
- This is a full-time position.
