Nursing Student Resume Template

Two free nursing student resume templates, one in US format and one in Canadian format, each built around a clinical placements section that gives the unit, the hospital and the dates of every rotation. That structure comes from the student clinical resume template published by the University of Toronto Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. Download either one as Word, PDF or plain text.

As of October 21, 2026, Intern Insider listed 2,875 healthcare and nursing internships, including openings at CVS Health, Shoppers Drug Mart, Kroger, Harmony United Psychiatric Care and 509 other organizations.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing students in the US applying for externships, nurse technician roles or nurse aide jobs

    What goes in each section

    Contact information

    • Put your name, city, phone number and an email address you check often at the top of the page. The Toronto template adds a line under the name with the program and school, such as Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) Student, Northbridge University.[2][1]
    • In Canada, leave out a photo, age, marital status and similar personal details, and never include your Social Insurance Number (SIN).[3]

    Education

    • Write the degree in full with its abbreviation, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in the US or BScN in Canada, followed by the school and your expected graduation date.[1][2]
    • List any earlier post-secondary programs below your nursing degree, each with the program name, school and years.[1]

    Clinical placements

    • Give each placement its own entry with the unit name, the hospital or agency and the months you were there.[1]
    • Under each placement, describe the patient population and their health needs in one line, and what you focused on learning in another.[1]
    • List placements from most recent to oldest, and start each bullet with a past-tense action verb.[2]

    Work experience

    • Include relevant jobs such as nurse aide or personal support worker roles, with a short description of the workplace and your responsibilities.[1]
    • Add numbers where they are accurate, such as residents assisted per shift.[2][3]

    Volunteer and community experience

    • For each role, name the agency, the population it serves and your part in the work.[1]
    • Unpaid work belongs on the resume. Job Bank treats it the same way as paid work.[3]

    Honors, awards and memberships

    • List each award with the granting institution and year, and each student membership with its start date.[1]

    Where this guidance comes from

The clinical placement structure on this page comes from one nursing-specific source, the University of Toronto student clinical resume template. We did not find a US nursing school sample that we could check, so the general rules (length, verbs, personal details) come from William & Mary in the US and from the Government of Canada Job Bank.

    Nursing student resume in Canada

The Canadian template follows the University of Toronto layout more closely: post-secondary education first, then clinical nursing placements, then volunteer and community experience, university clubs, relevant work, honors and professional memberships. It has no profile at the top, which matches the Toronto template. Add a two-line profile if a posting asks for one.

Canadian guidance allows up to two pages, and Job Bank lists the personal details to leave out. Our Canadian resume format page covers those conventions for every field.

    Where the sources disagree

Sources differ on length. William & Mary sets one page for internship and entry-level applications in the US, while the University of Toronto clinical template runs to two pages and Job Bank accepts two. Our US nursing template fits on one page. The Canadian template uses a second page when the placements need it.[2][1][3]

Worked example: US nursing student resume

This is the US template filled in for Lena Kowalczyk, a fictional final-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing student with three clinical rotations and a part-time nurse aide job. The notes explain what each bullet is doing.

Sample resume. The student, school, hospitals and employers are fictional.

    • Cared for two to three adults per shift recovering from abdominal and orthopedic surgery

Why it works: Patient load and population in one line: two to three adults, post-surgical.

    • Assessed pain, wounds and vital signs each shift and documented findings in Epic for instructor review

Why it works: Lists the assessments and the charting system, and says the charting went to an instructor for review.

    • Taught patients to use an incentive spirometer and to walk safely before discharge

Why it works: Patient teaching, described through one specific task.

Pediatrics, Northfield Children's Hospital, Madison, WI

    September 2025 - December 2025

    Clinical rotation, 72 hours

    • Worked with children aged 2 to 12 admitted for respiratory illness and dehydration

Why it works: The population is given by age range and condition, with nothing that could identify a patient.

Why it works: A pediatric calculation plus the instructor check that went with it.

    May 2025 - June 2025

    Clinical rotation, 48 hours

    • Supported adults on a short-stay inpatient unit, with a focus on therapeutic communication and safety checks

    June 2024 - Present

    • Assisted 8 to 10 residents per shift with bathing, mobility and meals on a memory care unit

Why it works: Paid care work with a per-shift number.

Why it works: Observation and escalation to the charge nurse, both part of nursing work.

    October 2025

    • Took blood pressure readings for about 70 community members and handed out follow-up information sheets

    Tips for nursing student resumes

    • List every clinical placement, including short ones, with the unit and hospital names written in full.[1]
    • If your program records hours for each placement, add them to the entry. The number gives the reader the size of each rotation.
    • Put current certifications such as Basic Life Support (BLS) near the top, with the issuing organization and the expiry date.
    • Write under supervision where a skill was supervised. Do not overstate what you did on placement.[3]
    • Never name a patient or include a detail that could identify one. Age group and condition are enough.
    • Describe non-clinical jobs in terms of care skills: communication, reliability and working under time pressure.
    • List student memberships, such as a student nurses association, with the year you joined.[1]

    Common questions

Give each rotation its own entry with the unit, the hospital and the dates, most recent first. Under it, write one line on the patient population and one on what you practiced or learned. Add the clinical hours if your program records them.
