About the role#
The UofL Health Nurse Extern Program offers nursing students a transition into professional practice. This paid, full-time externship provides hands-on experience in a variety of clinical specialties. Participants work alongside professional nurses to develop clinical reasoning skills and gain exposure to the diverse patient populations served by the UofL Health system.
What you'll do#
- Function as a Patient Care Assistant (PCA) in the float pool.
- Assist in the delivery of direct and indirect nursing care under the supervision of a registered nurse.
- Perform clinical procedures and maintain PCA competencies.
- Communicate effectively with all members of the health care team.
- Report changes in patient conditions to the RN immediately.
- Obtain laboratory specimens as directed.
- Assist with all aspects of registered nursing patient care under direct supervision.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and follow all safety and emergency codes.
What you'll need#
- Active enrollment in a nationally accredited nursing program.
- Successful completion of nursing fundamentals or foundations by the program start date.
- A minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
- An anticipated graduation date between August 2027 and July 2028.
- A valid BLS for Healthcare Provider certification.
- Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats.
- Ability to critically think through complex patient situations and evidence-based practice.
