About the role#
The University of South Florida Institute of Applied Engineering is hiring a Machine Learning Engineer Intern. This role supports Department of Defense-funded programs by developing analytic methodologies and tools to assist with Special Operations resourcing decisions. You will work alongside the CDAO and J8 teams to solve complex data problems.
What you'll do#
- Build and maintain data pipelines within Palantir’s Maven Smart Systems to ensure mission datasets are ingested, validated, structured, and optimized.
- Design and implement AI/ML workflows, including feature engineering and model evaluation.
- Prepare model outputs for operational use and develop analytic tools to support resourcing analysis.
- Create user-facing applications and interfaces to allow analysts to interact with models and dashboards.
- Prototype, test, and document machine learning models, collaborating with engineers to transition these into stable components.
- Integrate ML components into MSS ontologies and operational workflows.
- Work with mission analysts to refine requirements and translate operational questions into technical tasks.
- Support data governance, accountability, and documentation standards.
- Participate in sprint reviews, design sessions, and technical exchanges.
What you'll need#
- U.S. citizenship is required, along with eligibility to obtain a security clearance.
- Active enrollment in an undergraduate degree program in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Data Science with Junior or Senior standing.
- A minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Experience with software design, app development, and AI/ML development.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team with a self-motivated approach.
- Good communication skills to collaborate effectively with stakeholders.
- An interest in Artificial Intelligence and relevant personal projects.
- Willingness to work in a changing environment and the ability to learn new tools quickly.
Location & details#
- Location: Tampa, Florida, at MacDill Air Force Base.
- Modality: This is an on-site position.
- Compensation: $18.50 per hour.
- Schedule: 20 hours per week during Fall and Spring semesters; 29 hours per week during the Summer.
- Expected duration: November 2026 or January 2027 through May 2027, with a potential extension through December 2027.
