About the role#
UnCommon Law is seeking two undergraduate interns to support the legal team during the 2026/2027 academic calendar. This part-time role offers an opportunity to learn about the discretionary parole process and the complexities of the California prison system. Interns will assist with administrative tasks, case research, and document preparation while working in a hybrid environment.
What you'll do#
- Review and respond to non-client mail.
- Update contact records and maintain the legal database.
- Review case records and central prison files.
- Write memos regarding policy updates.
- Participate in virtual conference calls as a note taker.
- Conduct research and assist with special projects such as database audits or reviewing legal documents.
What you'll need#
- Compassion for incarcerated people and their family members.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail.
- A working proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and maintain sensitivity to confidential matters.
- Spanish language skills are strongly preferred.
- Majors in Political Science, Criminal Justice, or Communications are relevant to this role.
Location & details#
- Location: Oakland, California.
- Modality: Hybrid, with a minimum of 8 hours per week required at the office.
- Commitment: Part-time, 15-20 hours per week, from September 14, 2026, to May 14, 2027.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid position, though it includes a $600 stipend per semester.
