About the role#
Truesdell Animal Care Hospital and Clinic offers an externship program for DVM students to gain hands-on experience in a small animal practice. This program supports your clinical preparation by providing mentorship and exposure to daily patient care. You will work alongside our veterinary team to meet the learning objectives defined by your college or your own professional goals. We provide a stipend of $250 per week.
What you'll do#
Under the supervision of a mentor doctor, you will participate in the following activities:
- Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations.
- Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrub in to surgery and assist in the management of medical cases.
- Provide wellness care to patients.
- Develop client communication skills and polish technical abilities.
- Produce medical records, including SOAPs.
- Participate in general patient care activities.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Professional liability insurance. You must submit a certificate of coverage with your application.
- A professional demeanor and adherence to the practice standards and employee handbook.

- Location: Madison, Wisconsin.
- Modality: On-site.
- Term: Rolling, with externships typically lasting two to eight weeks.
- Schedule: Includes days, evenings, and weekends.
