About the role#
Trata is hiring a Research Scientist Intern for Summer 2027. You will work on creating benchmarks and evaluations that influence how frontier models learn. Your work will feed directly into model training runs at scale, and you will have the opportunity to co-write a paper. Strong performers will be considered for a full-time offer.
What you'll do#
- Design datasets and evaluation rubrics.
- Create data slices that expose meaningful model failure modes.
- Build and refine evaluation rubrics and reward signals for RLHF and RLVR training pipelines.
- Develop quantitative frameworks to measure dataset quality, diversity, and downstream impact.
- Partner with lab research teams to translate training objectives into concrete data and evaluation specifications.
What you'll need#
- Deep curiosity about how data structure, selection, and quality drive model behavior.
- Ability to design lightweight experiments and extract actionable insights from messy results.
- A bias toward building over theorizing.
- Prior experience at an AI safety organization, benchmarking organization, or RL environment company is a strong plus.
- Students or graduates in Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or Statistics.
Location & details#
- This internship is based in San Francisco, CA and New York, NY.
- The position is paid.
- Work modality includes on-site, hybrid, and remote options, though the role requires time in our offices. We cover travel costs for required office visits.
