About the role#
The ThinkBIG Technician program is a two-year training path for individuals pursuing a career as a Caterpillar Dealership Service Technician. You will alternate between classroom instruction at Illinois Central College in East Peoria, Illinois, and paid, on-site internship rotations at Thompson Machinery. Each semester consists of eight weeks of lab training followed by eight weeks of hands-on work under the guidance of a mentor. Upon completion, you will earn an Associate Degree in Applied Science and gain the skills necessary to advance into full-time technician roles.
What you'll do#
- Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on Caterpillar construction equipment under mentor supervision.
- Assist with the setup, service, installation, and replacement of machine components.
- Work with mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Use diagnostic tools and test equipment to troubleshoot machinery.
- Read and interpret service manuals and technical instructions.
- Operate computers and service software to document work and complete coursework.
- Communicate with mentors, instructors, and dealership staff.
- Submit required reports and academic updates on time.
- Follow all safety procedures and company policies.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma or equivalent, with a 2.7 GPA or higher preferred.
- Ability to maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA throughout the program.
- Meet minimum scores on the ACT, SAT, or ACCUPLACER tests.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to read technical documents.
- Proficiency with a PC, including Windows, Excel, and Word.
- A basic set of mechanic hand tools.
- Strong communication skills in spoken and written English.
- A valid state driver's license.
- Willingness to relocate or travel for school attendance.
- Commitment to complete the full two-year program.
- Ability to pass a company physical, drug screen, and background check.
