About the role#
The ThinkBIG Technician program is a two-year training path for students aiming to become Caterpillar Dealership Service Technicians. This role follows an alternating format where you spend 8 weeks in classroom instruction and lab training, followed by 8 weeks of paid, on-site internship at a Thompson Machinery location. You will work under the guidance of a mentor to gain hands-on experience with Caterpillar construction equipment.
What you'll do#
- Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on CAT equipment under mentor supervision.
- Assist with the setup, service, installation, and replacement of machine components.
- Interpret service manuals, technical instructions, and safety procedures.
- Work with mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical schematics and wiring diagrams.
- Use diagnostic tools and test equipment for troubleshooting.
- Operate computers and service software for documentation and coursework.
- Maintain professional communication with mentors, instructors, and dealership staff.
- Submit required reports and academic updates.
- Follow all safety procedures and company policies.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma or equivalent (2.7 GPA or higher preferred).
- Ability to maintain a 3.0 cumulative GPA and full program enrollment.
- Meet specific ACT, SAT, or ACCUPLACER score requirements.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and the ability to read technical documents.
- Proficiency with a PC, including Windows, Excel, and Word.
- A basic set of mechanic hand tools.
- Strong spoken and written communication skills.
- A valid state driver’s license.
- Ability to pass a company physical, drug screen, and background check.
- Willingness to relocate or travel for school attendance.
- Commitment to complete the full two-year program.
