The Local Investigations Fellowship is a one-year program designed for reporters to produce signature investigative work focused on their state or region for publication by The New York Times. Fellows work directly with veteran editors to learn the judgment, skills, and techniques of investigative journalism while maintaining their base in the communities they report on. This role requires a strong commitment to journalistic independence and the mission to seek the truth. ## What you'll do
- Produce signature investigative work focused on your state or region for publication by The Times.
- Engage in high-stakes investigations that impact people's lives, health, safety, and quality of life.
- Conduct deep research, including obtaining records, analyzing data, and developing human sources.
- Learn investigative reporting techniques under the guidance of experienced editors.
- Demonstrate a commitment to journalistic independence.
What you'll need#
- 3 to 5 years of professional experience as a reporter covering a beat for a local newspaper or digital news outlet.
- Status as an independent journalist or a journalist currently employed at a newsroom willing to provide a yearlong sabbatical.
- A specific investigative story idea that requires additional resources or editorial support.
- Ability to bring new perspectives to investigative journalism.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, remote position based in the United States.
- The fellowship duration is one year.
- The annual base pay for this role is $85,262.84.
- This position is represented by the NewsGuild of NY.
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States; sponsorship is not available.
