About the role#
As an Election Analytics Fellow, you will join the team responsible for The New York Times/Siena University Poll, the live election-night forecast known as The Needle, and various polling trackers. This role is interdisciplinary, bringing together reporters, editors, developers, and statisticians to analyze voter decisions and past elections. You will contribute to data-driven coverage through stories, graphics, and longer-term projects. The specific focus of your work will depend on your background, whether you lean toward writing, statistics, or software development.
What you'll do#
- Analyze polls, voter registration trends, and recent election results for articles or graphics.
- Collect and scrape data to support statistical analysis and reporting.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom.
- Participate in fellowship training and social programs.
- Support the mission of independent journalism.
What you'll need#
- No more than five years of full-time, professional journalism experience, excluding internships.
- A deep understanding of American elections.
- Experience working with data.
- Expertise in at least one of these areas: data-driven reporting, statistics, or development.
- Proficiency in R or Python, including experience developing statistical models or building productionized web applications.
- Experience working with cloud computing providers.
- Experience writing news stories is preferred.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid fellowship based in New York, New York.
- The term runs from June 7, 2027, to May 26, 2028.
- This is an on-site, hybrid role requiring regular attendance in the office four days each week.
- You may be required to work some nights, weekends, and holidays.
