About the role#
As a Research and Development Intern, you will work directly with our team on the field, greenhouse, and laboratory tasks that support our plant breeding and product testing programs. You will gain hands-on experience by participating in a full season of trial work, from initial planting to final harvest. This role involves real, visible work where your contributions to data collection and sample preparation directly influence product advancement decisions.
What you'll do#
- Assist in planning, packaging, and planting field trials to evaluate crop performance.
- Collect and record in-season data on plant growth, height, maturity, lodging, and disease reactions.
- Perform plot maintenance including stand counts, weed control, and general agronomic tasks.
- Support hand and combine harvests, including plot bagging, labeling, and threshing.
- Prepare post-harvest samples for laboratory and quality analysis.
- Help with plant care, crossing, and seed increases in the greenhouse and growth facility.
- Enter and verify trial data in the PRISM research database.
- Assist with the organization and inventory of seeds and samples.
- Travel with the research team to various trial locations across the region.
- Follow all safety and regulatory requirements for research plots, equipment, and chemical handling.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma or GED.
- Current pursuit of a degree in Plant Science, Crop Science, Agronomy, Soil Science, Genetics, Agricultural Science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated interest or coursework in agricultural research, plant breeding, or plant pathology.
- Comfort with detailed, repetitive data collection and accurate record-keeping.
- Basic computer skills, specifically with spreadsheets.
- Willingness to work outdoors in variable weather conditions for extended periods.
- Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to obtain a DOT medical card and perform towing duties.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in environments with dust, pollen, and greenhouse humidity.
Location & details#
- This position is based in Fargo, North Dakota, and requires travel to regional research plots.
- The internship runs from mid-May through mid-August for the Summer 2027 term.
- This is a full-time, paid, on-site position.
- Expect occasional long days and weekend work during peak planting and harvest windows.
