About the role#
The Student Nurse Extern program provides practical experience for senior-level nursing students. This 10-week paid externship allows you to enhance your clinical preparation while providing safe, effective patient care under the continuous, direct, on-site supervision of a designated Registered Nurse.
What you'll do#
- Assist nursing staff by performing assigned duties to help patients meet activities of daily living.
- Collect vital signs, specimens, and other related data, and communicate patient or family needs to the nursing team.
- Perform patient care activities and treatments for which you have documented basic competency under RN supervision.
- Provide personal patient care according to organizational standards and policies.
- Collaborate with team members to maintain high-quality care and a safe, neat work environment.
- Assist the RN in orienting patients to the hospital environment and reporting abnormal findings.
What you'll need#
- Active enrollment in a board-approved pre-licensure nursing program with completion of your Junior Year.
- Successful completion of a skills checklist at your school of nursing.
- Ability to demonstrate competency in skill performance as determined by the nursing intern competency checklist.
- Ability to work full-time hours alongside a designated RN.
- A commitment to all 10 weeks of the externship program.
- Successful completion of orientation to the job level and on-the-job training.
