About the role#
The Southwest Florida Water Management District is seeking a student intern to join the Vegetation Management Section. This role focuses on learning how invasive and nuisance plant species impact conservation lands, lakes, rivers, wetlands, and flood-control projects. You will support field operations and gain hands-on experience by contributing to the management of invasive plant populations across District-managed lands and waterbodies.
What you'll do#
- Perform field work, including surveys and herbicide applications, to assist with the management of invasive plant populations.
- Assist with data management and monitoring programs using tools such as GPS, ArcExplorer, ArcMap, and Survey 123.
- Operate a computer with standard software programs like Outlook, Word, and Excel.
- Hike long distances through woods while carrying and operating a backpack sprayer.
- Operate and load equipment including ATVs and watercraft.
- Drive a District vehicle within the coverage area, occasionally for two hours or more at a time.
- Work in remote outdoor environments, which may include exposure to adverse weather and pests.
What you'll need#
- High School Diploma or equivalency.
- Current enrollment in an accredited college or university, with a minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduates.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of invasive species and available control methods.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds, and perform tasks involving bending and reaching.
- Preferred majors include Biology, Botany, or Environmental Science.
- Preferred experience includes outdoor work, GPS/GIS, and technical report writing.
Location & details#
- Location: Brooksville, Florida.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Typically no more than 25 hours per week, generally two 10-hour days between Monday and Thursday, 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
- Compensation: $16.00 hourly.
