About the role#
The Wellness Counselor Intern supports students across our San Jose school sites. You will report to the Manager of Wellness Counselors and work alongside school psychologists, behavior intervention specialists, and teachers. This role focuses on providing direct mental health support and coaching to help students succeed in the classroom. You will gain experience in a school-based setting while contributing to our mission of closing the achievement gap.
What you'll do#
- Create treatment plans and goals for educationally related mental health services, including social skills groups and behavior supports.
- Provide culturally sensitive mental health services such as individual and group counseling, therapeutic case management, and crisis intervention.
- Collaborate with school staff during student support and multi-tiered systems of support meetings.
- Maintain accurate case notes in compliance with state licensing boards and ethical codes.
- Provide crisis intervention for both general and special education students as needed.
What you'll need#
- Active enrollment in a Master’s level or higher mental health program, such as MSW, MFT, PCC, or School Counseling.
- Commitment to our special education inclusion model.
- Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks effectively.
- Ability to travel between multiple school sites.
- Familiarity with socio-emotional learning, trauma-informed practices, and multi-tiered systems of support is highly preferred.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, on-site, paid internship based in San Jose, California.
- The role follows the site-based staff calendar, including school holidays and breaks.
- You must possess a valid California driver’s license and provide your own transportation for site-to-site travel.
