About the role#
As a Research Intern, you will investigate simulating, running, and decoding quantum error correction (QEC) experiments. Working alongside a dedicated supervisor, you will frame a research project at the intersection of QEC, computer simulations, computer architecture, and hardware-software co-design. Depending on the project, you may study noise models for quantum hardware, work on efficient simulations, explore decoding or predecoding methods, model classical resources for fault-tolerant programs, or investigate how to distribute decoding workloads across computing systems. Your work will contribute to understanding how QEC systems meet performance requirements for large quantum computers.
What you'll do#
- Develop algorithms, simulations, or architectural models to evaluate potential approaches.
- Investigate methods for reducing the compute, communication, memory, latency, or power requirements associated with QEC.
- Explore trade-offs between decoding performance, logical error suppression, and classical resource requirements.
- Collaborate with quantum scientists and engineers working across QEC theory, decoding, software, and hardware.
- Analyze results and communicate findings through technical discussions, presentations, and written reports.
- Produce clear, reproducible research code and supporting documentation.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Research experience in at least one of the following: running quantum circuits on hardware, decoding algorithms, or quantum error-correcting codes.
- Experience developing computational models, simulations, or research software.
- Proficiency in Python, C, C++, or another relevant programming language.
- Strong understanding of computer systems, architecture, and quantum-classical systems.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to communicate complex technical ideas clearly and work effectively across disciplines.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States.
- Preferred: Experience with qLDPC or surface codes, QEC decoding techniques, scientific computing, or compiler-hardware co-design.
Location & details#
- Location: Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA.
- Modality: Hybrid.
- Commitment: Full-time for 10 to 12 weeks.
- Compensation: $55.70 per hour.
