About the role#
Paumanok Veterinary Hospital offers a Veterinary Technician Student Externship/Preceptorship Program designed to provide practical, hands-on clinical experience. This program supports students currently enrolled in an accredited Veterinary Technician program, focusing on building practice-readiness through mentorship and exposure to both routine and emergency veterinary care.
What you'll do#
As an extern, you will work directly with veterinarians, technicians, and support staff to gain experience in the following areas:
- Assisting with examinations, diagnostics, and treatments.
- Administering medications and vaccinations.
- Monitoring anesthesia during surgeries.
- Conducting laboratory tests, including bloodwork and urinalysis.
- Taking radiographs.
- Caring for hospitalized animals.
- Educating pet owners on preventive care.
- Maintaining a clean and organized clinical environment.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Veterinary Technician program.
- A strong passion for animal care and a desire to learn.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Enthusiasm for participating in patient care.
- Basic knowledge of animal handling and medical terminology is considered a plus.
