Veterinary Technician Student Externship/Preceptorship Program

About the role#

Paumanok Veterinary Hospital offers a Veterinary Technician Student Externship/Preceptorship Program designed to provide practical, hands-on clinical experience. This program supports students currently enrolled in an accredited Veterinary Technician program, focusing on building practice-readiness through mentorship and exposure to both routine and emergency veterinary care.

What you'll do#

As an extern, you will work directly with veterinarians, technicians, and support staff to gain experience in the following areas:

• Assisting with examinations, diagnostics, and treatments.
• Administering medications and vaccinations.
• Monitoring anesthesia during surgeries.
• Conducting laboratory tests, including bloodwork and urinalysis.
• Taking radiographs.
• Caring for hospitalized animals.
• Educating pet owners on preventive care.
• Maintaining a clean and organized clinical environment.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in a Veterinary Technician program.
• A strong passion for animal care and a desire to learn.
• Strong communication and teamwork skills.
• Enthusiasm for participating in patient care.
• Basic knowledge of animal handling and medical terminology is considered a plus.
