About the role#
Gaussian Splatting is a 3D and 4D scene reconstruction technique that allows for photorealistic novel-view synthesis. Because it offers low rendering complexity, it is a candidate for playback on consumer devices like TVs, streaming sticks, and phones. This 24-week internship focuses on evaluating Gaussian Splatting as a potential future streaming format. You will work with the Video Algorithms team to address technical hurdles, including model training time and compression efficiency, to help build a practical system.
What you'll do#
- Explore strategies for compressing Gaussian Splatting models using open datasets.
- Identify and test methods to reduce training and encoding time.
- Characterize the trade-offs between model size, training time, and rendered quality while comparing these against streaming rate targets.
- Contribute to research on dataset needs for representative scenes.
- Design and build a proof-of-concept that demonstrates Gaussian Splatting-based rendering.
What you'll need#
- You are currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field, with an expected graduation date in June 2027 or later.
- You have a strong background in 3D or 4D scene reconstruction, neural graphics, or related research areas.
- You are fluent in Python and comfortable with software engineering practices like version control, testing, and code reviews.
- You possess a solid understanding of machine learning and deep learning concepts with hands-on experience in training and evaluating models.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship located on-site in Los Gatos, California.
- The term for this role is Fall 2026.
