About the role#
The Herzberg Instrument Science Fellowship is a 2-year postdoctoral position, with the possibility of a 1-year extension. It is designed for early-career researchers to explore their science and instrumentation interests. The goal is to support the development of future Principal Investigators for astronomical instruments and facilities. This role is based on-site at either the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory in Penticton or the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory in Victoria.
What you'll do#
- Undertake research activities in astronomical instrumentation or observational astronomy.
- Develop research software, data pipelines, and simulations.
- Lead projects, proposals, instrument subsystems, software packages, observing programmes, or working groups.
- Collaborate on multidisciplinary technical or instrumentation projects.
- Mentor or supervise undergraduate students, graduate students, or junior researchers.
- Engage in outreach, teaching, public talks, or community science activities.
What you'll need#
- A Ph.D. in astronomy, astrophysics, engineering, or a related field, obtained within the last five years or expected within 6 months of appointment.
- Experience in astronomical, astrophysical, instrumentation, engineering, data science, or related research beyond the Ph.D.
- Experience in the design and development of astronomical instrumentation.
- Experience in obtaining, reducing, analyzing, or interpreting astronomical data.
- A track record of publishing high-calibre astronomical research papers or other technical outputs.
- Ability to obtain Reliability Status security clearance.

- This is a full-time, paid position.
- Work is performed on-site in Victoria or Penticton, British Columbia.
