About the role#
The Power Systems Engineering Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory is seeking interns to focus on power systems and power electronics interfaces. You will perform dynamic modeling and validation of power systems that contain a high percentage of inverter-based resources. This role involves evaluating the impact of these resources on power grids and contributing to research through technical documentation.
What you'll do#
- Provide technical analysis for power electronics and control systems of renewable generation, battery energy storage systems, and industrial drives.
- Build power system EMT simulations and perform system validation under supervision.
- Integrate, test, and use user-written black box models in PSCAD for wind turbine generators, solar inverters, and battery energy storage systems.
- Evaluate studies regarding the impact of high percentages of inverter-based resources on power systems.
- Write and publish analysis results in technical reports and peer-reviewed journals.
- Follow all Environmental, Safety, and Health policies to maintain a safe work environment.
What you'll need#
- Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.
- Current enrollment as a full-time student in a bachelor’s, master’s, or PhD program, or graduation within the past 12 months.
- Solid knowledge of power system EMT modeling, stability, control, and inverter-based resources.
- Experience with EMT software tools such as PSCAD, MATLAB/Simulink, DIgSILENT, or RSCAD.
- Ability to present technical results to diverse audiences.
- Coursework or project experience in power systems or power electronics modeling.
- Familiarity with programming languages such as Python or R.
- Experience with RTDS modeling and HIL testing, or familiarity with EMTP-RV and EMTP-ATP, is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Golden, Colorado (Remote and on-site options available).
- Employment type: Full-time.
- Term: Rolling (3 to 12 months).
- Compensation: $44,500 to $71,200 annually.
- Note: All offers are conditional on the ability to obtain work authorization and DOE site access, which includes a background investigation and a pre-employment drug test.
