About the role#
The Assembly, Integration and Test (AIT) team at Muon is responsible for building, integrating, and validating spacecraft hardware. As an Industrial Engineering Intern, you will help improve the tools, systems, and processes needed to manufacture spacecraft at scale. You will work alongside AIT, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to analyze production data, identify bottlenecks, and develop capacity models. This is a hands-on role where you will apply engineering principles to increase production efficiency and throughput.
What you'll do#
- Analyze spacecraft assembly and test processes to improve efficiency, quality, and scalability.
- Develop and maintain manufacturing documentation, including process maps and standard work instructions.
- Collect and analyze production data to identify trends and constraints.
- Support the development of production capacity and resource planning models.
- Assist with workflow optimization, production scheduling, and resource allocation.
- Conduct time studies and process observations to establish baseline performance metrics.
- Support lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Identify improvements for material flow, kitting, tooling, and workstation layout.
- Build dashboards and data-driven tools to track operational performance.
- Assist with root-cause investigations for production issues.
- Partner with technicians and engineers to implement and validate process improvements on the production floor.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Industrial, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Systems Engineering, Operations Research, or a related field.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing and operations fundamentals.
- Demonstrated analytical skills and the ability to use data to solve problems.
- Experience using Excel or similar tools for data analysis and visualization.
- Ability to work hands-on in a laboratory or production environment.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to approach operational challenges from a first-principles perspective.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work in a collaborative team.
Location & details#
- Location: San Jose, California.
- Term: Summer 2027 (May through September).
- Schedule: Full-time, on-site.
- Compensation: Paid internship.
