About the role#
Millennial Software is hiring two Engineering Interns for the Summer 2027 term to work on Crucible, our agentic modeling and simulation platform. You will build a synthetic non-Earth imagery generator that renders spacecraft from open 3D models. This project addresses the scarcity of real imagery by creating labeled datasets that include per-component segmentation masks. You will work with mentors, participate in daily standups, and present your progress to leadership at the end of the program.
What you'll do#
- Build a rendering module in Crucible using open 3D spacecraft models and a parametric scene generator.
- Emit per-component segmentation masks with every rendered frame and record the rendering parameters.
- Produce a labeled dataset of several thousand frames across multiple targets.
- Demonstrate that you can generate a dataset for a new target in under one working day.
- Fine-tune a segmentation model from a published architecture and run training and evaluation in Keystone against a held-out synthetic set.
- Post-process predicted components into TMDB schema fields and populate one TMDB record end to end.
- Document your pipeline and present your work at a leadership readout.
What you'll need#
- U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance.
- Standing as a rising senior or an exceptional rising junior pursuing a BS in Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong skills in Python and comfort working in Git and Linux development environments.
- Coursework or project experience in computer graphics, 3D rendering, computer vision, or machine learning.
- Experience with rendering tools like Blender, Unity, Unreal, Three.js, or PyRender.
- Familiarity with mesh formats such as glTF, OBJ, or STL.
- Experience with image segmentation or object detection models like U-Net, Mask R-CNN, or SAM.
- Knowledge of orbital mechanics or spacecraft systems.
- Experience with GPU training and experiment tracking.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship based in Chantilly, Virginia.
- The program runs from May 17 to August 6, 2027.
- The role is on-site with some remote flexibility.
