About the role#
This internship involves working on learned feedback control for multi-fingered robotic hands. You will join a team focused on reinforcement learning within high-fidelity simulation, tactile and proprioceptive feedback, and transferring these policies to real robot hardware. The team spans hardware, simulation, controls, and policy learning.
What you'll do#
- Drive an independent research thread on learned reactive control for dexterous hands, covering everything from problem formulation to real-robot evaluation.
- Design controlled experiments and benchmarks to isolate specific issues with manipulation dexterity.
- Integrate proprioceptive signals into control policies.
- Close the sim-to-real gap for contact by using system identification, domain randomization, and realistic models.
- Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and communicate research plans, progress, and results.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Research experience in reinforcement learning or learning-based control for robotic manipulation or locomotion, shown through publications, open-source code, or other projects.
- Experience with Python and physics simulators such as MuJoCo, Isaac, or Drake.
- Ability to obtain work authorization in the United States at the time of hire.
- Availability for a minimum of 16 consecutive weeks.
- Preferred: Experience with sim-to-real transfer, tactile or force/torque sensing, retargeting, and manipulation mechanics.
- Preferred: Hands-on experience with multi-fingered robotic hands or grippers on real hardware.
- Preferred: A record of significant results through grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications.
Location & details#
- Location: Redmond, Washington.
- Modality: On-site.
- Employment: Full-time internship.
- Term: Rolling, 16 to 24 weeks.
