About the role#
This co-op position is for students currently enrolled in the Industrial Maintenance Certificate or a related program at Grand Rapids Community College. You will work alongside maintenance and engineering teams to gain hands-on experience in a manufacturing environment. The role focuses on applying classroom knowledge to real-world mechanical and electrical systems while preparing you for a future career in maintenance or process technology.
What you'll do#
- Assist maintenance technicians with preventive maintenance on motors, conveyors, and pneumatic or hydraulic systems.
- Support troubleshooting by observing machinery in operation and identifying abnormal performance.
- Use hand and power tools to disassemble and reassemble equipment.
- Make basic mechanical adjustments under supervision.
- Support basic electrical and control system troubleshooting.
- Follow machine diagrams, manuals, and work instructions to complete tasks.
- Document maintenance work and equipment issues.
- Help maintain equipment uptime by completing assignments on time.
- Keep tools, parts, and work areas organized and stocked.
- Participate in continuous improvement and problem-solving activities.
- Maintain a safe work environment by following all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment or acceptance into the GRCC Industrial Maintenance Certificate or a related program.
- Basic mechanical aptitude and an interest in industrial equipment repair.
- A willingness to learn electrical troubleshooting, control systems, PLC basics, and mechanical systems.
- Ability to follow instructions and work under supervision.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- A strong work ethic, reliability, and a positive attitude.
- Ability to work independently on assigned tasks after training.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
